Following protest against fracking exploration on native
lands in the last few weeks the First Nation has erected a traditional long
house near the New Brunswick Legislator. The structure is planned to be there
indefinitely and has a traditional scarred flame going. Protesters marched to
the long house on the weekend and step
up in it. “If they want to come in and talk and listen and just find out what
our culture is all about, they’re more than welcome,” says Harry Laporte, Grand
Chief of the Maliseet Grand Council. Protesters plan to stay in the public eye
and maintain a peaceful approach.
