A UN expert states that Canada has major social issues with
their aboriginal population. James Anaya, a UN rapporteur on indigenous rights,
recently visited Canada and said that the country has not narrowed its
disparities between aboriginal citizens and other Canadians, often fueled by
disputes over land and resources furthering tension and distrust. This has
become even more evident recently with protests regarding gas companies
becoming violent. Anaya has said "There's a crisis in Canada with regard
to indigenous issues, notwithstanding some important developments within Canada
over the last decades”. Anya said that the conditions that the indigenous
people often live in are more comparable to poor and lesser developed
countries.
